    Slido has a free version as well as various paid levels. The free version allows you to use 3 polls/event for up to 100 participants, with an Unlimited Audience Q&A feature.

    Ease of use & Accessibility

    Slido is easy to use for participants. They simply need a link provided, which can be done by copying the link into a chat box, or by sharing a QR code. Sli.do is also easy to use for practitioners, once you have become oriented to the tool and how it can be used.

    Slido can be integrated into other tools, such as Teams and Google Slides, or used as a standalone tool outside of presentations.

    Slido is mobile friendly for participants, on any device, without having to download any apps.

    According to Slido “you can secure your event by adjusting its privacy settings. Basic events are visible in the search results and can be accessed by typing in the event code… You can hide your event code from the search suggestions. Only those participants who have the exact code will be able to access the event during the dates of the Slido event.”

  • H5P

    Description

    H5P (short for Html-5-Package) helps you to create interactive videos, interactive presentations, quizzes, interactive timelines and more that can be embedded (like a YouTube video) and added to Learning Management Systems and websites.

    H5P content can be shared/downloaded and uploaded to Moodle, Drupal or WordPress and other sites. H5P content can be created within these sites (through plugins), on the H5P.org site, or by using the Lumi desktop app and then uploaded into the sites where the content will be used. According to this article, there are three main areas of benefit relevant to learning activities that come with the integration of H5P: Gamification, Interactive activities, and Accessibility.

    • H5P is used extensively by the language side of the sector to integrate activities into online language learning courses.
    • Many H5P curriculum activities can be downloaded on the Tutela.ca site for ESL/LINC Teachers.

The terms state, in exhaustive detail, exactly what types of security are used, from computer security to human resource security, including encryption; those who use the service are notified in the case of a data breach.”

  • Kahoot

    Description

    Kahoot is a free participant-response tool for administering quizzes, facilitating discussions, and collecting survey data. It is a game-based tool you can use in real time. Questions are shared with participants as they answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet, or computer. The idea is to create a a social, fun and game-like environment. Kahoot allows for the design of multiple-choice quizzes as well as polls and surveys that populate on-the-spot data. Quiz questions and polls can be used to stimulate quick decisions as well as whole-class discussion.

    • Generally used in live video conference (eg. Zoom) settings to create additional engagement with participants.
    • Used to generate anonymous feedback.

    Kahoot is mobile friendly on mobile browsers, and has a mobile Android and Appl app as well.

    If participants log in with Kahoot accounts to participate, some personal information can become viewable. Common Sense Media (which focuses on child and student privacy) has a very useful privacy, safety and security overview, with overall good ratings except when it comes to data security and sharing:

    • “The terms of Kahoot! state they use reasonable organizational, technical, and administrative measures to protect users’ personal information.”
    • “Kahoot! may share a user’s data with third-party service providers to support its services and if a user participates, data may be shared with sponsors of sweepstakes, contests and other similar third-party marketing promotions.”
    • “Kahoot! collects personally identifiable information and other automatically collected usage information through its services and may receive a user’s personal information from other sources, such as public databases, joint marketing partners, and other third parties. Kahoot! does not collect any personal information from a person who merely plays a Kahoot, except if a user participates in a Kahoot! which is hosted using the Player Identifier feature.”

  • Microsoft Forms

    Description

    You can use Microsoft Forms to create forms, surveys, and quizzes as well as to collaboratively edit and share the forms with other people. Use Microsoft forms for intake, pre-workshop or program assessment, program, session, or event evaluation, and more.

    Forms is part of the Office 365 suite. Forms can be accessed directly from Teams so you can setup a Forms tab, add an existing form to gather responses, create a new form, show survey results, create notification from your form, collaborate on a form, or conduct a quick poll within a team. All these functions occur within Microsoft Teams. You can link your Microsoft Forms Survey or Quiz to an Excel Spreadsheet. You can also access Forms from a web browser.

  • Google Forms

    Description

    You can use Google Forms to create forms, surveys, and quizzes as well as to collaboratively edit and share the forms with other people. Use Google forms for intake, pre-workshop or program assessment, program, session, or event evaluation, and more.

    Google provides pre-designed templates including feedback, and course evaluation. You can also build from scratch using the blank template option. There are many types of questions available, including short answer, paragraph response, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, linear scale, and multiple choice grid. You can also add custom logic that take survey respondents down different survey pathways based on how they answer questions. You can embed images and video directly into a form, which is a great way to assess what students think and learn immediately after viewing the image or video. You can also include an upload feature for students to upload documents.

    The data from Google Forms is collected in a Google Spreadsheet, which allows for further analysis. Google Forms also offers a “summary of responses” feature that creates visual representation of close-ended questions (e.g., multiple choice, checkbox). Google allows users to embed, link, and email Google forms, so that you can easily share the results with others.

    Privacy/security features (including data security and message encryption)

    Google Apps ask for your personal information (e.g., name, G+ profile, photos, videos, browsing history, map searches, docs, or other Google-hosted content) and wants you to make your profile publicly visible. When creating a Google account, a valid name, email address, username, and password are required. It is also optional to provide a phone number to recover your account if the password is lost. Upon creation of your account, Google closely tracks your searches, bookmarks, and location services, among other data. Google uses cookies to identify your browser and device and to present appropriate ads, remember search preferences, and offer options based on user data. In addition, they also use people’s information like Gmail messages, photos, videos, browsing history, map searches, docs, or other Google-hosted content to maintain and develop Google services, and protect both users and Google from malware and spam (see Google Privacy Policy).
